Mark Kroos

Audio MP3

Williamsburg, Virginia’s Mark Kroos is something out of the ordinary. He is one of only a handful of touring double neck guitarists. Listening, or better yet watching the video, to this track will leave you in awe. Even though his music is mostly instrumental right now, one of his main influences is punk rock (he cites Chicago’s The Lawrence Arms as one of his favorites). Mark says he is starting to write music with lyrics, and would love to play in a band when the time is right. It’s going to be fun to keep an eye on Mark. He is a young, talented, and driven musician with huge potential for an exciting career.

Half Full Outlook – “Tell Me”

Catchy pop punk is essential for any summer playlist. Fresh out of the suburbs of Orlando, Florida is Half Full Outlook. They fuse together pop-punk and hip-hop. Amazingly, their debut EP that sounds like they’ve already signed a major label deal and moved to LA. Their sound is a good twist on what was coming out of Florida suburbs in the early 2000s (like NFG and Yellowcard). Judging by their photo, I think they could use a new car–so give them a try and buy their EP if you like it.

Me and Mark – “Hey Is For Horses And You’re A Horse”

Me and Mark

Audio MP3

Josh James (Evergreen Terrace, Casey Jones) and singer/songwriter Mark O’Quinn released their first EP in April. They’re called Me and Mark and they hail from Jacksonville, Florida. Yeah, it’s yet another acoustic side project from a hardcore band, but I promise this is good stuff. This is probably my favorite song off their EP, which pokes fun at all of the ego problems in the music industry. There are swears, so put on some headphones if you’re in a cube farm with suits and ties.

You can listen to the whole EP over at good ole MySpace.

The Future Is Me – “Heresy In The Age of Reason”

The Future Is Me

Audio MP3

This quintet from Raleigh, North Carolina came out of nowhere this spring and dropped a record called “Return to Earth Again” (bassist Billy Fairhurst was added after promo shots). The Future Is Me (formerly Left On Cates) is currently opening at shows at popular triangle area (that’s Durham, Raleigh, and Chapel Hill for you Yankees) clubs like the Dive Bar, Local 506, The Pour House, and The Brewery. This track sounds more like a single from an established band rather than a local band trying to figure things out. Is that a double bass drum I hear? Hell yeah.

The Campaign 1984

Divide Bang Camaro by 4, stick them in the south and you get The Campaign 1984 from Asheville, North Carolina. They self-describe their sound as “dirty, sexy, drunken rock n’ roll”, and they’re dead on. Check out the video if you get a chance… aviators, camo, plaid, and beards… this is perfect. I’m proud to put them on the Southern playlist.
